Institutionen för stad och land

The Division for Landscape Architecture, Department of Urban and Rural Development, SLU, Uppsala, announces a postdoctoral position in Landscape Architecture. The announcement is part of a 4-year strategy at the department to develop theories and methods for landscape approaches in research. The research subjects at the department are Rural Development, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Communication and we are also announcing postdoctoral positions in Environmental Communication and in Rural Development. The three post doctors are expected to develop research within their respective subjects as well as to collaborate in developing theories and methods relating to landscape approaches in research. Landscape approaches and landscape analysis have become increasingly important in research on natural resources and land use as well as in policy initiatives for environmental supports, managing water sheds and agriculture, and in planning.

The research at the Division for Landscape Architecture aims to develop knowledge of theory and methods for planning, design and management of landscapes, and is held together by a desire to develop knowledge both in support of our educational programme and landscape architects in their professional role. Theories within the environmental design disciplines, as well as profession-specific and visually oriented problem solving methods, are in focus of our interest. The subject covers a wide field, from regional and urban planning to the design of urban spaces, with the awareness of the mutual dependence between these different levels. Landscape Architecture is the art of combining functionality, beauty, sustainability and economy in the design of man's environment – in a broad sense, the landscape of man.

Duties: The aim of the project is to develop knowledge related to the application of the ELC in practice. The European Landscape Convention applies to all landscapes, from urban to un-populated, and from the landscapes people face in their daily lives to the landscapes were the spend time for recreation. The Convention emphasizes its objective of improving public and community active democratic participation in the work of conservation and change of landscapes. The implementation of the Convention is expected to affect long-term planning and design of all types of landscapes. This implies the need for knowledge of how different stakeholders, citizens, businessmen, property managers and others, values the landscape they use and how those who work professionally with landscape view their task. We need democratic processes that engage the local community and methods to implement planning on the basis of the ELC. For planning practice and the design of the physical environment, this means that the focus shifts from object to place, and that the process from concept to realization must be transparent and inclusive. Applicants shall be prepared to collaborate across the disciplinary borders with neighbouring projects at the department. The fieldwork shall be in Sweden.
