Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). We are looking for an IT support engineer to join the IT Services team at EMBL Heidelberg. The team maintains and develops the state-of-the-art IT infrastructure for the laboratory and is responsible for providing high quality IT support to the users at EMBL Heidelberg.

Responsibilities of this role include:

  • Providing excellent desktop computing support to our users in an environment with 1000+ MacOS, Windows, Linux computers and mobile devices. Supporting Linux users will be a preference for this post.
  • Providing help with systems and software installations as well as effective troubleshooting of software and hardware issues for the desktop computing and mobile device area
  • Providing a knowledgeable, friendly and reliable IT helpdesk to our users
  • Ensuring a high quality of service and user satisfaction by adequate tracking and documenting of support tasks and change in the IT environment and supported by efficient communication with our users
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of the EMBL IT infrastructure, the user experience and the support process as well as identifying areas, which would benefit from further standardisation and/or automation.

To ensure a reliable support for the EMBL IT infrastructure this position includes occasional weekend duties which will be compensated accordingly. The successful candidate will join the IT Services Desktop Support team and will report to the Manager Desktop Support.

Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of work experience in a professional IT support organization or can demonstrate equivalent practical experience. The successful candidate will be technical expert in managing a number of current desktop and mobile operating systems with extensive experience in supporting Linux systems. Likewise (s)he will have a solid knowledge of current standard desktop software packages and will be experienced in automating systems and software installations.

The successful candidate needs to be familiar with state-of-the-art technologies to integrate desktop and mobile systems within an enterprise IT environment and to facilitate e.g. the access to the network, file systems and email. Good communication and English language skills are required and a basic knowledge of German would be advantageous. A service-oriented attitude, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well and professionally under pressure are essential. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently as well as working as a part of a team.
