Ph.D. student in Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Biomass

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Materials Science

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 13,400 first and second level students and almost 1,900 doctoral students. KTH has 4,900 employees.

Activities at KTH Industrial Engineering and Management cover the Engineering, Technological and Economic knowledge necessary to be able to develop new products, material and production processes in a sustainable fashion as concerns Technical management, Financial Profitability and the Environment. One precondition for innovation and enterprise is the study and application of basic physical and chemical phenomena as well as the integration of new, often multidisciplinary technologies, methods and tools. Core knowledge areas include Energy Technology, Industrial Design and Innovation, Product and Production Development, Materials Development, Micro and Nano Technology as well as Industrial Economics, Organisation and Management.

The department of Materials Science and Engineering is active in research and education within a field that encompasses everything from structural to advanced materials. Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary field based in physics, chemistry and mechanics. The department research is focused on three main areas: Materials Design, Process Design and Materials Function. KTH has a leading position internationally in this field.

Job description

The Division of Energy and Furnace technology, in close collaboration of various industries and funding agencies, focuses on research and development of low carbon technologies, including clean combustion/incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis of biomass and waste. Both experimental and mathematical modelling tools are used.

Biomass is the only carbon-containing renewable source, which makes it suitable for fuel and chemical production , and is the only viable renewable source for the production of aromatic compounds, that our society currently depends on. It is known that the catalytic fast pyrolysis is one of promised thermochemical conversion routines for lignocellulose biomass that produces chemicals and fuels compatible with existing petrochemical infrastructure. Research of catalytic fast pyrolysis is currently focused on a maximum carbon conversion rate via developing multi-function catalysts used in situ that benefit from the advantages of both hydrodeoxygenation and zeolite cracking, and also a novel process.

The objective of this position is to develop a novel process of biomass catalytic fast pyrolysis and catalysts for a higher carbon efficiency and a lower oxygen content in the biooil . Both process of catalytic fast pyrolysis and the catalyst for selective reject oxygen from biomass will be developed.

Qualifications

The successful applicant is expected to hold or to be about to receive an MSc degree, in either Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or a related field. The applicant should have documented knowledge of biomass pyrolysis, or gasification , and well developed analytical and problem solving skills. Knowledge and experience on catalysts for biomass thermal application are considered as a merit.

We are looking for a strongly motivated person, who is able to work independently. Good communication skills in English, by speaking and writing, is required to publish and present results at international conferences and in scientific journals. The evaluation will be based on how well the applicant fulfills the above qualifications.

We will place great emphasies on personal characteristics for this position.
