Doctoral Research Fellow (PhD-stipendiat) on Low Power Sensor Front-end for Resonating Sensors

The Faculty of Technology and Maritime Sciences at Buskerud and Vestfold University College is seeking applicants for a 3 year PhD project on Low Power Sensor Front-end for Resonating Sensors

Description

This research project will have focus on optimizing front-end circuits for resonating Micro- and nanosensors. Resonating sensors need to be activated, i.e. the sensors have to be actively forced into oscillation using electrical signals. There are three mechanisms for exciting such a resonating sensor, electromagnetic, piezoelectric and electrostatic actuation. The traditional approach has been that a circuit is used to activate and keep the sensor in resonance and another circuit is used to read out the amplitude of the oscillation. This approach may have some drawbacks such as high power consumption and complexity of the activation and read-out circuitry. We have proposed new types of Low power front-end based on bi-directional, frequency tunable amplifiers which will be the starting point for this project. These front-ends are especially suited for ultrasound sensors for subsea and medical applications.
