Role Overview

As the demand for our expertise continues to grow, an opportunity has arisen for a Lead Structural Design Engineer, based at Leicester or Horsham.

The lead design role will be reporting to the Principal Structural Engineer and will be responsible ensuring the quality and consistency of the teams output in the production and control of designs and technical documents.

The employee must have experience in the production of all designs associated with the new build or refurbishment of overhead line projects. The candidate must have a excellent level of maths and science and have good communication skills.

In the role they will manage the production through a robust checking process but must also develop drawing office standards, mentor and train the junior engineers and technicians and when work dictates support the actual delivery of the outputs.

This role will need to support the development of workshare opportunities through amec and as before include in clearly defining the required workscope; training remote staff and assuring the received outputs are up to standard.

The employee must be enthusiastic and mature enough to operate in a diverse team and work without full time supervision. This role can lead to many of the career paths for the employee as they develop through AMEC Foster Wheeler.

Key Responsibilities

  • The quality of all tender and construction designs for all OHL structural elements;
  • The adherence to and control of documents and drawings in accordance with AMEC management procedures;
  • Design input/output within the designated risk management process;
  • Development of team specific standards to ensure the consistency of the output;
  • Development of the Structures Team;
  • Accept ownership of work to be done (i.e. being required to undertake specific actions within an agreed job boundary, the execution of a delegated task, activity or process);
  • Management of the Structural Engineering Team;
  • Providing programme updates to the OHL Lead Engineers for the duration of the project life;
  • Highlighting any quality and delivery risks;
  • Identifying the need for and developing and running training for the team to ensure greater efficiency and accuracy;
  • The development of new industry software in conjunction with Principle OHL & software engineers;
  • Provide a technical interface with 3rd parties.

Role Requirements

  • Degree qualification in Structural Engineering;
  • Chartered or working towards a recognised professional qualification;
  • Industry experience;
  • Experience in CAD packages PLS Tower & CADD is essential;
  • Good Computer skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work within a team;
  • Good attitude to obtaining new skills and capable at transferring existing skills to overcome new challenges.
