KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Job description

The PhD student will be conducting research within the project Organizing sustainable cities: planning, strategy, governance, management – a cooperation between KTH and three other leading European universities. The project aims at grasping how the concept of ‘sustainable urban development’ becomes translated into practice through the networks and practice spheres of contemporary city administrations.

The conducted research will primarily involve ethnographic studies of the practical implementation of sustainable urban development policy in a number of European cities. The position is based at the KTH campus in central Stockholm, but the applicant should be aware that the research will also demand periods of field studies in other European cities.

Qualifications

Good communication skills in English as well as one additional European language (other than Swedish) are required. The applicant should at the time of commencing the position possess a master’s degree or equivalent competence within a relevant field or discipline (e.g. spatial planning, human geography, sociology, anthropology, ethnology, political science, public administration).

In addition to the above, the candidate is expected to be a curious and ambitious individual who is strongly motivated to conduct research. S/he should be used to work in a structured way and have the ability to work both individually and in teams.
