PhD Position – Gesture recognition algorithms for mobile architecture based on ultrasound measurements

Appearance of new ultrasonic mems sensor (micromechanical system), offers new integration opportunities on mobile devices like smartphone or tablets, especially for gesture recognition. Compared to video approaches, this technology has lower consumption. However, this advantage makes sense only if it is serviced by low power gesture recognition algorithms also, that is to say, algorithms that match a mobile device architecture. In particular, processing chain should include a pre-processing step close to the sensors, like data compression or event-driven sampling, to reduce the data flow toward the gesture recognition algorithms. Hence, another challenge will be to develop such algorithms based on poor quality inputs due to data compression and/or to the nature of the ultrasound measurement itself.
