PhD Scholarships (6 Opportunities)

University of Leeds - School of Computing

The School of Computing, ranked in the top 10 for research impact in REF2014, is making a substantial investment in 6 new PhD Scholarships. This is an exciting opportunity for prospective UK/EU PhD students to engage in world class research from theoretical foundations of computer science and artificial intelligence through to highly applied computational modelling and systems engineering, carried out in collaboration with leading companies.

The six available fully funded UK/EU PhD scholarships are each worth over £65k covering fees, stipend and RTSG. The scholarships are fully supported by School and EPSRC funding; however, requests for part-funding will also be considered where the balance is covered from elsewhere.

We welcome applications within the following general themes:

Artificial Intelligence – Cognitive approaches to computer vision, qualitative spatiotemporal reasoning and machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), user modelling, ontologies, and research related to Leeds’ EPSRC National Facility for Innovative Robotic Systems.

Applied Computing in Biology, Medicine and Health – Computational, behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, computational biology, bio-robotics, virtual pathology, hospital scheduling, process, text, data analytics and high-resolution visualization with Leeds' MRC Medical Bioinformatics Centre.

Computational Science and Engineering – End-to-end computing for science and engineering, from advanced solvers for partial differential equations and fluid dynamics, through novel parallelisation methodologies, to visualization of extreme scientific data and topological data analysis.

Distributed Systems and Services – Emerging issues in distributed/internet computing, large-scale dynamic interactions and resource sharing, architecture, security and dependability, performance and quality of service, collaboration in distributed environments.

Algorithms and complexity – Computational complexity, application of probabilistic ideas to algorithmic problems, structural graph theory, algorithms on graphs, computational logic, theory and applications of scheduling.

Value: The award covers academic fees and an annual maintenance award of £13,863.

Number of awards: 6

Entry requirements: A minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree (2.1), or an MSc with Merit. If English is not your first language, then candidates must also meet the University’s English language requirements.

Applications are invited from UK/EU students mainly; however, requests for part-funding for students outside UK/EU will also be considered where the balance is covered from elsewhere.

Application deadline: 22 March 2015

How to Apply: Formal applications for research degree study should be made on-line through the university's website. Please state clearly on the funding section of the application form that you wish to be considered for scholarship ‘PhD scholarship Computing (FAO Dr Raymond Kwan)’.
