PhD Studentship (i-STUTE/EPSRC): Storage/upgrading of heat for reducing industrial energy demand

University of Warwick - School of Engineering

Start date: 5th October 2015
Duration: 3 years

The project: Storage/upgrading of heat for reducing industrial energy demand

This award is funded by the School of Engineering in support of the RCUK funded Interdisciplinary Centre for Storage, Transformation and Upgrading of Thermal Energy (i-STUTE).

i-STUTE explores the low carbon heating and cooling technologies needed to drastically cut the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions see www.i-STUTE.org. This project in i-STUTE focuses on Thermal Transformers for use in industry. A thermal transformer is a device similar to a heat pump in which a portion of a waste heat stream at e.g. 90 C can be converted to useful process heat at e.g. 150 C the remainder being rejected to ambient. The only work inputs are for pumps or valves it is a heat driven machine. There are many applications in industry that we are exploring with our industrial partners. In principle these devices can be based on absorption / desorption of gases in and out of liquids (e.g. LiBr and water), adsorption / desorption of gases in and out of solids (e.g. active carbon and ammonia) or a gas-solid chemical reaction (e.g. NH3 and CaCl3, water and MgO). The challenges are to get good heat and mass transfer, fast reaction rates and repeatability over thousands of cycles.

Eligibility:
Due to funding restrictions this award is available for well-qualified UK or EU students. Candidates are required to hold a 1st or 2.1 UK honours degree or equivalent in Engineering or other relevant discipline. The admission process will also require two supporting academic references and an English qualification if your first language is not English.

Funding Details:
The Scholarship will pay an annual stipend at the standard rate (currently £13,863) and tuition fees at the Home/EU rate for three years. International students may apply and, if successful, would be required to make up the difference in fees between the home and the overseas rates.

How to apply:
To apply for this post you must complete the online application form and quote scholarship referenceiSTUTE.

As soon as you have a University ID number you will be invited to upload your degree certificate, transcripts, CV and a personal statement that explains your specific research interests and why you should be considered for this award.
