The European Patent Office (EPO) is the second-largest intergovernmental organisation in Europe, employing almost 7 000 staff from over 30 countries. Its Information Management (IM) department has some 450 permanent staff, as well as a number of managed service providers, working on IT and information processing, with a professional and proactive focus on supporting the EPO's different business processes.

Within the directorate “Corporate Applications” (CA), the department “Corporate Central Services Support” (CCSS) is in charge of the creation of various services, including those relating to the EPO's external and internal web presence. The CCSS team is looking for an IT Architect with a focus on web front-end design, rich internet applications (RIA) development, information architecture, content integration and search engines.

Main duties

The IT Architect will

  • ensure, in co-operation with transversal IM units, the cohesion of the design with the Enterprise Architecture vision and requirements
  • provide support in drawing up and maintaining a multi-year implementation roadmap for systems, and propose solutions for such systems
  • make recommendations on the architecture of web applications and web infrastructure, and take part in assessing their impact on existing and planned architecture
  • participate in identifying and selecting technical components
  • define development standards, guidelines and environments for the web developers
  • analyse business requirements and functional specifications, and draw up technical specifications
  • help to develop proofs of concept
  • manage the quality of deliverables from internal and external suppliers (code reviews, metrics, tests)
  • deliver the developed applications to the Operations Integrator
  • work in direct partnership with business representatives and the managers of the functional and technical domains.

The ideal candidate will have

  • at least five years’ experience in creating IT solutions in the fields of web content management and search, as well as in web application architecture design and development environments
  • proven experience with the platforms used at the EPO for web solutions, mainly IBM WebSphere Portal and Web Content Management, Atlassian Confluence wiki, Apache Lenya, and Google Search Appliance
  • proven experience in web front-end development using the W3C standards (HTML, CSS, XML) and the JavaScript (JS) language and the usual JS frameworks such as jQuery and dojo
  • proven experience in web back-end development in PHP and Java.

IM Functional competencies description

Minimum qualifications

Diploma of completed university studies at Master’s level or - in exceptional cases - equivalent professional experience. Excellent knowledge of one official language** and ability to understand the other two. In exceptional cases, excellent knowledge of one official language and ability to understand another. In such cases, a fixed-term contract of up to three years could be offered.

The successful candidate will be selected on the basis of qualifications and relevant experience, supplemented as appropriate by interviews, tests and/or a personality questionnaire.

It is intended to hold the interviews in April in Munich.

Indicative salary and benefits

The EPO offers competitive salaries, an excellent social package, and varied work in a modern international environment. The net salary for this vacancy ranges from EUR 4 500 to 6 500 per month, depending on experience. The EPO also operates contributory medical-insurance and pension schemes. In addition, depending on their personal circumstances, EPO staff may be entitled to relocation benefits and various allowances.
