Continuous and mesoscopic flow models for flood risk analysis

The research project involves the development and application of fluid dynamic models (CFD) for the simulation of free surface flows. Modeling (ie dam break, urban areas, weir side, bridges, density currents, meandering channels ...) is carried out by schematizing the fluid as a continuous medium (A) and as a mesoscopic particle structure (B). In (A) the classical Navier – Stokes equations are adopted; in (B) the discrete Boltzmann equations are solved on lattices structures with 27/19 speed components. The project verify the numerical reliability and computational efficiency of the two models through the development of computer codes based on Open Source technology. As application of the proposed models, the sloshing of a liquid in a tank subjected to harmonic and random oscillations (project-TIAR DICA) will be also studied.
