Electronics Technician for Detector Technologies

The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 21 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.

Within the Instrumentation Services and Development Division, the Detector and Electronics Groupis now seeking to recruit an Electronics Technician for Detector Technologies (m/f), Permanent position.

FUNCTION

You will participate in the development, production, test and support of X-ray detectors for synchrotron radiation beams. You will be technically supervised by the engineers of the group and will interact strongly with other staff from different technical teams such as electronics, mechanics and software, as well as technical and scientific staff at the beamlines.

Your work will involve:

  • Electrical and electronic characterisation of sensors;
  • Participation in the development of X-ray detectors;
  • Production and support of "standard" detectors currently used at the ESRF beamlines;
  • Test and evaluation of different kinds of X-ray detectors;
  • Assembly, installation and characterisation of prototypes;
  • Design of electronic boards and associated mechanics for detectors.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

You should be educated to HND, HNC, DUT, BTS, Staatlich Geprüfter Techniker, Título de Ingeniero Técnico, Diplomapost secundario or equivalent level.

A strong background in electronics with skills in analog circuits especially dealing with low level signals, as well as good experimental skills are required. Basic knowledge of data interfaces (GPIB, USB, GigE, camera link...) and of general laboratory instrumentation and techniques is also important. Good knowledge of high density connectivity and electromechanical aspects will be an asset. At interview, you should expect practical tests in our on-site laboratory, including the ability to interpret electronics schemes.

You must be self-motivated, able to manage your time, liaise with the scientists, technicians and other ESRF staff, and able to work in teams. Previous experience in design, production or modification of electronic equipment would be greatly appreciated, while experience in scientific instrumentation would be an advantage.

The annual gross salary will be within the range of 27 - 28 k€ depending on qualifications and experience, plus possible additional allowances according to status.
