Junior researcher on HPC-IO

BigStorage is an European Training Network (ETN) whose main goal is to train future data scientists in order to enable them and us to apply holistic and interdisciplinary approaches for taking advantage of a data-overwhelmed world, which requires HPC and Cloud infrastructures with a redefinition of storage architectures underpinning them – focusing on meeting highly ambitious performance and energy usage objectives.

Description

The general objective of this concrete PhD is to investigate how I/O hints (but not limited to), introduced by the applications, runtime or users about their I/O behavior, can improve the energy efficiency and/or the performance of the I/O operations on different I/O hierarchies created by different devices SSD, HDD, RAM and NVRAM.

The candidate will be mainly hosted at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Spain).

After month 30, the candidate will join FORTH (Greece) under the supervision of Dr. Angelos Bilas where he/she will finalize the research examining caching and tiering approaches to data placement using different I/O hierarchies (deep – hierarchies).

Key Duties

Analyze existing I/O hints on different PFS and FS
Propose a new set of I/O hints, such hints should be accompanied by applications that can use them.
Research and propose “data schedulers” able to manage the information from different layers
Work with different architectures (real and simulated) and study the effect of the I/O hints w.r.t. placement.
Implement and demonstrate the ideas, internally and with papers in international conferences/journals.
