PhD Position – Brazing of metal carbon assembly

LCA has a long experience in assembling materials by diffusion bonding and brazing. One of its field of research is the brazing of dissimilar materials like ceramic to metal. Such configuration requires to take into account the chemical as well as the mechanical properties of both parts. In some cases, even if the chemical properties enable sufficient interactions between the parts, mechanical properties and more precisely thermal expansion mismatch can lead to failure. Brazing ceramic to metal requires to take into account mechanical and chemical issues to succeed. Reliable assemblies may be obtained using some composite and/or transient liquid phase brazing solution. Composite fillers may enable to master the thermo mechanical properties of the assemblies by adjusting the stress repartition through the join. Transient liquid phase could help to braze at low temperature which may reduce the mechanical impact of the thermal expansion This thesis belongs to the field of “material science and engineering” and will investigate thermochemistry and diffusion (interactions between parts, microstructure engineering), mechanics (properties, finite element analysis) as well as processing (temperature, atmosphere) to develop new brazing solutions.
