The Marie-Curie project will provide 15 full PhD scholarships in terms of full-time positions. Candidates for becoming "Early-stage researchers" can apply for pre-defined PhD topics in the area of open cities/smart cities. Five positions each will be provided the University of Münster, Germany, New University of Lisbon, Portugal, and University Jaume I, Spain.

In addition to providing positions for 15 doctoral researchers, GEO-C offers a number of further exciting opportunities. The core topic of the project, smart and open cities, is highly relevant to society as a whole as more and more people live in cities. The outcome of GEO-C (scientific contributions and a practical toolkit to realise open cities) can have a significant impact on making cities in Europe and elsewhere more liveable places. By engaging with both city councils and companies working on related topics, GEO-C also provides doctoral researchers with the opportunity to gain experiences in working with and in both types of partner organisations. In addition, this strong link to councils and companies allows for excellent networking opportunities, facilitating career development for the students. Finally, through its international and interdisciplinary structure, GEO-C will enable doctoral researchers to gain a deeper understanding of cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary issues, and thus prepare them to work in such contexts after completing their degree. The programme provides substantial mobility allowance and thus will enable students to spend a significant amount of time abroad, i.e. at a research institution in different European countries.
