Doctoral Student or Postdoctoral Researcher, CASR

The Materials Engineering Research Group at the University of Oulu is looking for a

Doctoral Student or Postdoctoral Researcher

for a research project over the period lasting until 31.12.2018.

The Materials Engineering Research Group is a key part of the Centre for Advanced Steels Research (CASR), which is a strategic development area at the University of Oulu. In the research group, there are two professors working on the production, properties and applications of steels, a professor of physical metallurgy and a professor of mechanical metallurgy. There is also a lecturer and two teachers to help fulfill the undergraduate teaching requirements of the Mechanical Engineering teaching program, i.e. materials science courses as major or minor subjects. In addition, there are two postdoctoral researchers and about 15 other researchers. The group has a wide variety of experimental equipment suitable for mechanical testing and microstructural characterization. Seehttp://www.oulu.fi/casr/ for further information.

Job description

This position concerns research into the influence of macrosegregation on the mechanical properties of high strength and abrasion resistant steels. The research will be executed in collaboration with SSAB Europe as a part of the research program System Integrated Metal Production (SIMP) managed by the Finnish Metals and Engineering Competence Cluster (FIMECC). The research topic is suitable for a doctoral thesis or it can be conducted at postdoc level. While the research program lasts until the end of 2018, contracts have to be renewed annually for reasons related to the source of funding, which is 50% SSAB and 50% Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation.

Job responsibilities

You will preferably have an MSc or PhD degree in materials science. Furthermore, you will be expected to carry out research by working in close cooperation with SSAB Europe as well as research groups internationally. Preferably, you will be familiar with the physical metallurgy of steels, and the various metallographic techniques used for studying microstructures. You must also have a good knowledge of spoken and written English. A practical knowledge of Finnish is also very beneficial.

If you do not possess a doctoral degree, preference will given to applicants motivated to use the funding period to complete a doctoral degree course in the University of Oulu Graduate School, UniOGS.

Salary

Depending on personal achievement and performance, the salary of the Doctoral student will be set at levels 2–4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities (€1 964 – 3 588 gross) and the salary of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be set at level 5 (€ 2841 – 4156 gross).
