Postgraduate Scholarship in Lymphatic Modelling

The University of Sydney

Description:
A full-time Postgraduate Scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good honours degree in science or engineering with a major in mathematics or mathematical physics, to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Applied Mathematics. The project is to undertake multi-scale computational modelling of the lymphatic vascular system.

Researchers in the Applied Mathematics group at the University of Sydney are part of an international consortium of four universities working to create biological knowledge and experimentally informed computer models of the body’s lymphatic system, which is where immune response is mounted. The system is also central to cancer metastasis. The consortium includes nodes in the UK and US, and actively involves other major universities as well. Its five-year funding by the US National Institutes of Health has just been renewed. The group at Sydney has the opportunity to guide the direction of the work of the experimental laboratories overseas. There would be opportunities to collaborate with overseas researchers, including the possibility of embedding visits, and to present work at domestic and international conferences.

Eligibility:
Applicants should have completed their undergraduate study and attained Honours Class 1 or equivalent with a good grounding in mathematics. Knowledge of differential equations and numerical modelling or analysis applied to nonlinear systems, along with understanding of human body fluid mechanics, will be highly regarded.

Amount Awarded:
The scholarship provides a living allowance of up to USD 22,920 per annum (tax exempt) for qualified students undertaking a full-time degree of Doctor of Philosophy by research. If awarded to an international student (i.e. not a citizen of Australia or New Zealand or a permanent resident of Australia), a tuition fees scholarship will also be provided. The scholarship will be for three years subject to satisfactory progress, with a maximum extension of six months. A thesis allowance and support for conference travel will also be available.

It is expected that the scholarship will be taken up by 31 March 2015, although, subject to approval, a later start date may be possible.

Application Guide:
To apply, forward full details of your career so far and a supporting statement to Associate Professor Chris Bertram (c.bertram<στο>sydney.edu.au). Applications should include a curriculum vitae, copies of academic transcript and testamur for all previous tertiary (undergraduate and postgraduate) qualifications (including an explanation of the grading schemes used for all such studies), names and contact details of at least two academic referees, and for international applicants, a copy of your passport’s personal details page and, if your undergraduate degree is not from a university in an entirely English-speaking country, test reports for a recognized English language test undertaken within the last two years. If applicable, you may also include proof of any scholarly publications or output in a relevant field of research within the last three years and examiners’ reports for any previous research theses/projects completed.

Closing Date: 15 March 2015 (11:30pm Sydney time)
