Position Summary:
The Technoeconomic Analysis will lead a research team investigating the technical and economic performance of various biofuels production processes from biomass, with a focus on technologies that will enable next generation biofuels beyond cellulosic ethanol. The research will be focused on the development of technoeconomic models of various operational modalities that could exist in a cellulosic biorefinery based on current technologies and those enabled by the advances at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and the research community at large. This Project Scientist will be a key member of the Institute, having extensive experience in the bioenergy and process economics fields, including development and management of collaborations with industry, government, and academia.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Direct, manage, review, and participate in the development of technoeconomic models of biorefineries using specialized chemical engineering software, specifically SuperPro and/or Aspen Plus
• In collaboration with other JBEI members, develop customized unit operations based on JBEI technologies to understand impact on cost and performance as compared to the current state-of-the-art
• Explore, identify, and perform the best and most relevant technoeconomic research to be performed at JBEI
• Collect and analyze data and prepare results for publication in scientific journals and presentations at seminars
• Participate in and organize group meetings and seminars.
• Establish, maintain, and foster collaborations with academic, government, and industrial entities
Essential Qualifications:
• Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, biochemical engineering, and/or significant industrial experience in technoeconomic analysis of bioenergy technologies
• With at least five years of experience in the bioenergy field with additional expertise in process design and process economics
• Ability to carry out systems level analysis of complex biochemical process streams
• Experience using software such as ASPEN Plus and/or SuperPro and familiarity with MS Office, and MS Excel in particular
• Must adhere to all Berkeley Lab and EH&S safety policies
• Ability to conduct independent research, maintain excellent records and manage complex data sets
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work in a team environment and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues
• Demonstrated publication record
• Expertise in developing new software codes
