Postdoctoral Scientist - X-ray Spectroscopy

JOB DESCRIPTION

DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics.

In the framework of the ERC Synergy Grant project AXSIS (Attosecond X-ray  Science: Imaging and Spectroscopy) a team of international scientists is designing and building compact attosecond hard X-ray sources to explore their use in attosecond serical X-ray crystallography and spectroscopy to make movies of biological, chemical and physical processes on an attosecond time scale with atomic resolution.

The position

  • Develop an X-ray spectroscopy for the AXSIS project
  • Assemble and guide the building of the XES (X-ray emission spectroscopy) and XAFS (X-ray absorption fine structure) instrumentation
  • Work with the AXSIS team to interface the X-ray spectroscopy instrumentation with X-ray beamlines at the Synchrotron Petra III and the FELs (CFEL and attosecond compact X-ray source)
  • Design and conduct XES and XAFS experiments on bioorganic metal catalysts
  • Design and conduct XES and XAFS experiments on large proteincofactor complexes, including the oxygen evolving complex of Photosystem II
  • Work with the AXSIS team on combined time-resolved studies that combine X-ray diffraction and X-ray spectroscopy experiments

The position is limited to 3 years.
Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. DESY operates flexible work schemes. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women.
