PhD position in Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN AWESOME: Postgraduate Research on “Improved Wind Farm Operation and Control”

The PhD candidate will work on improved wind farm operation and control. Methods for wind plant control and monitoring and for very short horizon wind forecasting will be developed and tested using both numerical simulations and experiments in a wind tunnel, conducted using a scaled wind farm model. The new methods will be assessed in terms of their ability to increase yield and power quality and reduce fatigue.

Description

The successful candidate will be employed for 3 years (36 months) and will receive a financial package including mobility and family allowance according to the rules for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in an EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks (ITN) (http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/wp/2014_2015/main/h2020-wp1415-msca_en.pdf).

The candidate will be hosted at the Techinsche Universität München (TUM). As part of the intra-network training of the AWESOME project, the candidate will also spend up to six months at the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology of the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and at the company ALSTOM, in Barcelona, Spain. The candidate will also take part in all other activities of the AWESOME project (courses, summer schools, workshops).

The candidate will develop technology for the use of the wind turbines as wind sensors, providing wind condition information throughout a wind power plant. Such information will be exploited for improved monitoring of the wind farm and enhanced operation by means of smart control strategies. The algorithms will be tested using suitable numerical simulation tools. The candidate will also make use of a scaled experimental facility for simulating wind farms in a boundary layer wind tunnel. Test results will be used to validate the computational tools and to verify the performance of the developed methods. It is expected that the candidate will be able to collaborate to the operation, modification and improvement of the experimental facility, as needed for achieving the project goals.

The successful candidate should have the following knowledge and experience:
- Master (or equivalent) degree in Engineering
- At least basic knowledge of wind energy technology
- Full proficiency in the English language
- Experience with C programming language and Matlab
- Experience with standard laboratory equipment and tools

To apply, candidates are requested to submit the following documentation (in English) at the email address phd-awesome.campagnolo@tum.de:
1. Cover and motivation letter
2. Curriculum Vitae
3. Copies of complete academic transcripts and degree certificates, if available at the time of application, in English
4. At least two letters of recommendation from previous employers or supervisors
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in person or by telephone, Skype or other similar communication means.

As part of the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments, TUM is pursuing the goal of substantially increasing the diversity of its staff and faculty. As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, TUM explicitly encourages nominations of and applications from women as well as from all others who would bring additional diversity dimensions to the university’s research and teaching strategies. Preference will be given to disabled candidates with essentially the same qualifications.
