Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Environmental Management Consultant with a background in applied environmental management in a development context to support IMC’s growing international environment and climate portfolio. This will involve working on free standing related activities and collaboratively across the business to further develop the portfolio with a wide range of clients in all the firm’s main areas of business. This will involve identifying opportunities, developing proposals, providing consultancy services and project management.

Working in both donor-funded international development markets and alongside private sector organisations, IMC Worldwide is involved in a wide range of environment and climate related activities across sectors. The scope of the role is broad and diverse; the candidate will be involved in the development and application of environmental safeguarding tools to international standards for infrastructure development (environmental and social impact assessment, environmental management plans, environmental management systems, audit and due diligence etc) through to policy and research in support of government and donor led programmes in natural resource management and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Duties and responsibilities:

· Work with colleagues to help to develop and deliver the IMC climate and environment strategy, which is an important component of the business plan for the climate, environment and social development technical unit. In doing so, make strategic decisions on the proactive targeting of new business and support the needs of other business areas as appropriate;

· Work closely with technical and managerial leads from across the business to develop our climate and environment capability; it is anticipated that there will be particularly close working with colleagues in IMC’s Low Carbon Built Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction Team;

· Deliver technical inputs on a wide range of assignments as required; these may be home based or overseas. The candidate should, therefore, be prepared to travel for periods typically of between two and six weeks. This will be individually and as part of inter-disciplinary teams;

· Manage projects and lead relevant tasks within a project, including supervising the work of others; in doing so, ensure projects and programmes are delivered to the high standards expected by IMC and our clients;

· Lead and contribute to the preparation of high quality expressions of interest and proposals;

· Contribute to the teams records of experience and marketing materials;

· Project management, including financial and technical reporting.

Essential Skills and Experience

· Postgraduate degree in an environmental relevant discipline (for example Environmental Management/Assessment/Engineering or Natural Resource Management);

· Experience in business development and fee-earning consultancy;

· Minimum of 10 years of experience of applied environmental management;

· 5 years’ experience in the delivery of international development projects, (including for example work on ESIA, EMPs, SEAs, applied research, training and capacity building) in low income countries;

· Knowledge and experience of working with the international standards of the International Finance Corporation and World Bank Group and the safeguard and management policies of other major multi and bi-lateral donor agencies;

· Demonstrated ability to work effectively with engineers, planners and policy makers in multi-disciplinary teams;

· Experience in writing successful proposals (including technical components) for multi- and bi-lateral clients, such as DFID, World Bank, EU and USAID;

· Passion for international development;

· Excellent work ethic;

· Excellent written and spoken English.

Desirable Qualities

· Experience of undertaking/leading environmental and social due diligence audits/advisory services for investors or donor agencies;

· Demonstrable experience of preparing/inputting into project bid and tender documents to maximise environmental performance and compliance;

· Multi sectoral experience ideally in the following sectors - transport/water supply/energy/forestry/extractives;

· Confidence in the application of eco-system based approaches to project and programme design;

· Sound understanding of the international climate change agenda and climate finance architecture;

· Skilled in the use of GIS/remote sensing tools.
