Research Fellow - Network and System Administration

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design, Department of Computer Science, has a vacancy for a research fellow. The nominal length of the research fellowship period is four years, and 25% of the position will be subject to a work plan. You can read more about the faculty/department here

The position will be affiliated to the research group in Network and System Administration (NetSys). The group focuses on multidisciplinary research in areas of importance to network and system administration. The group's research interests span many topics, from advanced network technologies and service management to the development of cloud technology (minimal operating systems, autonomous virtual machines, Virtual Machine Monitors etc.) and big data (web mining and opinion mining, in particular). The group maintains close contact with the industry to keep up to date on trends and relevant research challenges. The group is also attached to an international master's degree programme in Network and System Administration in collaboration with the University of Oslo.

Field of work

The PhD research fellow will focus on issues relating to the NetSys group's research, and also participate in teaching. It is most desirable that the topic of the research fellowship is linked to the group's research on cloud technology and the use of SDN policy, but a topic more related to the group's research on big data or web/opinion mining is also a possibility. The position will be related to the group's areas of research, and can focus on the following areas:

  • Network and SDN functionality with regard to scalability and dynamics and energy saving ('Green SDN') in a cloud
  • SDN policies
  • Big data / web mining / opinion mining
  • Intelligent algorithms for the above

Expert committee

Applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The application must contain:

  • Your application, CV and copies of diplomas and references
  • Your second degree/master's degree thesis and any other scholarly work that you wish the expert committee to take into consideration, and a list of your publications
  • Names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of two referees (also describe your relationship to them) We recommend that applicants with an international university education enclose an explanation of the university's grading system.
  • All documents must be in either English or a Scandinavian language.

You must submit a project description as part of your application. The project description must demonstrate an academic level that makes it probable that the project will result in a PhD degree within three years. It should reflect the applicant's research interest, and demonstrate that the candidate has the ability to formulate his/her own research ideas and structure his/her research independently. The project description can form the basis for deciding the precise research topic for the research fellow position. The project description must not exceed ten pages, and it must include the following:

  • A research question and research plan
  • References to relevant research in the field
  • A detailed implementation plan

The salary for the position, position code 1017, is pay grade 50–54 on the pay scale for state employees, currently NOK 429,700–458,800.

Qualifications and conditions

A master's degree or an equivalent qualification in informatics, ICT, telematics or another relevant field Good written and oral English skills at an academic level

Admission to the doctoral programme is a condition for taking up the position.

Experience requirements

Experience in one of the following areas: Cloud technology, networks, SDN, big data, programming, web mining, operating systems, system administration, developer operations (DevOps), automation, configuration management
Relevant research experience, industrial experience and/or a good international network

Desirable qualities

  • The ability to work independently and purposefully
  • Good cooperation skills
  • The ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing
  • The ability to work systematically in accordance with a plan and deliver on schedule
