Salary: Scholarship

The University wishes to appoint a Graduate Scholar who will register as a full-time MPhil/PhD student and undertake a research project to develop knowledge for the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) on designing for extreme weather events.

Over the past ten years the world has experienced some extreme weather events that have caused serious problems to the modern way of life, and in some cases have caused multiple deaths. Climate scientists suggest that these extreme weather events will become more frequent in the future as a result of global warming, which in turn causes changes to the global weather system.

CIBSE is funding a PhD student to undertake research into increasing the resilience of buildings to extreme weather events. It will look at the sizing of HVAC systems but also the vulnerability of energy supply, structural risks (e.g. damage to external elements caused by strong winds) and masterplanning principles. The aim will be to provide design guidance to CIBSE members but also ‘suitable’ weather data for such extreme weather performance analysis.

The Scholarship will offer:

• MPhil/PhD fee waiver at the UK/EU rate (scholarship only open to UK/EU students);
• Tax-free stipend of £10,000 per annum;
• Support, subject to satisfactory performance and academic progress, for three years;
• Supervision by Dr Ali B-Jahromi (UWL) and Dr Anastasia Mylona (CIBSE).

Applicants will be expected to hold a good first degree (first or upper second class) and a Masters degree (or equivalent) in Civil or Mechanical Engineering. Potential candidates should have experience of thermal simulation for existing or new buildings. Confidence in AutoCAD and Revit will be advantageous.

All applicants for whom English is not their first language must also demonstrate their English language proficiency through evidence of IELTS at overall 7 (with 6.5 in all four skills) or by providing access to MA/MSc chapters or published work.
