PhD Studentship: Active wingtip morphing for loads control

Cranfield University - Centre for Aeronautics

Start Date: June/July 2015

Duration of award: 3 years

Ref: Supervisors:  Dr. Mudassir Lone and Dr. Alastair Cooke

Sponsored by Airbus UK and UK Aerospace Technology Initiative, this studentship will provide a bursary of up to £13,500 - £ 14,500 p.a. (tax free) plus fees* for three years

Description

A candidate is sought for doctoral study starting in April 2015, who will be contributing to an Airbus led project which is part of a government and industry initiative aiming to transform the UK’s current overall aircraft and wing design capability. This study will focus on exploring the design space for an active folding wingtip for load alleviation purposes. The technical focus will be on initially studying the impact of such a device on wing loading during gust encounters and developing a loads control scheme to maximise its benefit. This will be followed by exploring the systems requirements for such a device. The candidate will be contributing to the work packages related to the development of enabling device technologies for high aspect ratio wings. The project covers a range of aerospace related disciplines including: aerodynamics, flight dynamics, active loads control and aircraft systems integration.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in an industrially relevant research environment supported by Airbus. The duration of the project is 3 years and the student will work closely with Airbus engineers and would also be expected to spend some of the duration of the project working in industry. There will also be considerable interaction with engineers at EADS Innovation Works.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in aerospace or mechanical engineering. Self-motivated individuals are sought with excellent mathematical and numerical modelling expertise, along with good communication skills. The ideal candidate should also have some experience in the fields of aerodynamics (including CFD), structures (Finite Elements), aeroelasticity, flight mechanics and nonlinear dynamics. This scholarship is strictly restricted to UK/EU citizens.

Funding:

*This is a fully funded doctoral study where the scholarship covers full UK/EU PhD tuition fees and a tax-free stipend between £13,500 and £14,000 in 2015/16.
