PhD Studentship: Simulation of future commercial aircraft concepts

Cranfield University - Centre for Aeronautics

Start Date: June/July 2015

Duration of award: 3 years

Supervisors: Dr. Mudassir Lone and Dr. Alastair Cooke

Sponsored by Airbus UK and UK Aerospace Technology Initiative, this studentship will provide a bursary of up to £13,500 - £ 14,500 p.a. (tax free) plus fees* for three years

Description

A candidate is sought for doctoral study starting in May 2015, who will be contributing to an Airbus led project which is part of a government and industry initiative aiming to transform the UK’s current overall aircraft and wing design capability.  This study focuses on developing a state-of-the-art flight simulation architecture within which radical future aircraft concepts can undergo piloted evaluation.  The overall aim of the project is to address the software and hardware challenges posed by the need for real-time simulation of large flexible aircraft and take advantage of the breakthroughs that have occurred in the gaming industry.  The student will be required to work very closely with the existing large aircraft simulator at Cranfield University.

This is an ideal opportunity for those wanting to enter the flight simulation or gaming industry. The successful candidate will also receive training in related aerospace engineering subjects such as flight dynamics, vehicle modelling and simulation. Furthermore, this is an excellent opportunity to work in an industrially relevant research environment supported by Airbus. The duration of the project is 3 years and the student will work closely with Airbus engineers and would also be expected to spend some of the duration of the project working in industry.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in computer science, software engineering or aerospace engineering.  Self-motivated individuals are sought with excellent mathematical and numerical modelling expertise, along with good communication skills. The ideal candidate will be skilled in programming in C/C++ and MATLAB/Simulink. Experience with graphics generation and computer networking are desirable.

Funding:

*This is a fully funded doctoral study where the scholarship covers full UK/EU PhD tuition fees and a tax-free stipend between £13,500 and £14,000 in 2015/16.
