The use of recycled aggregates for the improvement of sustainability in RC structures in a life cycle perspective

The overarching aim of the proposed research is to study the effects of the incorporation of large amounts of recycled aggregates, both from C&DWs and EAF slag,on the main strength and durability-related properties of hardened concrete.A particular attention will be devoted to those factors that currently limit the application of those materials for structural applications,i.e. the reduction of workability and the influence of the attached mortar in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) on the development of mechanical strength of recycled concrete with C&DWs, the high specific weight of concrete with slag, its environmental compatibility in terms of leaching of toxic materials and the expansion phenomena of the fine particles. In addition, the environmental compatibility of those kind of materials should be assessed by means of experimental analyses and analytical estimations, based on a life cycle approach.
