Open positions in Human-Computer Interaction: Science2.0 and Second Screen Applications

Research in the HCI group of the Dept. of Computer Science, KU Leuven focuses on how people interact with information, relying on language technology (including text and multimedia mining), visualization and computer graphics. The focus is on new algorithms and interaction techniques, using the full spectrum of hardware from small mobile devices to large multi-touch displays. Applications include technology enhanced learning, music, research information systems and virtual worlds.

Project

We have two open positions (fully funded), one on personalised advertisements and second screen applications and one on science2.0 approaches to cultural heritage content.

In the first project, partners have developed technologies for natural language understanding, video and speech processing that can be applied to television content (http://www.parisproject.be). The aim of our work is to develop prototype demonstrators that can be used to evaluate the added value of such technologies for personalised advertisements and second screen applications. The emphasis of our work is thus on rapid prototyping and evaluation of the demonstrators.

In the second project, partners have developed technologies to deploy advanced european cultural heritage services in the cloud (http://pro.europeana.eu/web/europeana-cloud). Our work focuses on the development and evaluation of applications for researchers that demonstrate the added value of these services. In earlier development, we have worked with philosophers and musicologists. We will now start a new cycle of experimentation with a new focus.

Funding is available immediately. The research will be carried out at the Department of Computer Science of KU Leuven. Work in these positions can be the start of a PhD program, but we’re also interested in good candidates who are unsure about doing a PhD!
Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible as positions will remain open until filled by suitable candidates.

Profile

We expect from applicants:

  • an excellent Master’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline
  • a very good background and interest in human computer interaction research
  • strong programming skills and the ability to do independent research
  • strong commitment and the ability to work in a team
  • a high level of proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
