PhD Researcher - Fog Computing

JOB DESCRIPTION

The IBCN group belongs to the Department of Information Technology (INTEC) of Ghent University (UGent) and is part of the Internet Technologies Department of iMinds. At a national level the group is collaborating with about 100 industrial partners in many multidisciplinary projects. Also internationally there is strong involvement in European research projects, especially in the Future Internet area, with about 70 finished and running EU projects over the past 10 years. Since the start of the IBCN group in 1992, research resulted in 1600 publications in international journals and conference proceedings, 80 PhD's, 45 international awards, and 6 spin-off companies.

Job description

  • You perform research in the domain of Fog Computing.
  • You are conducting research in the domain of Fog Computing and more specifically the domain of the Cognitive Internet of Things. Besides performing fundamental research, you will carry out tasks in the framework of European-level and national research projects.
  • You are analysing current research trends in Fog Computing and the Cognitive Internet of Things. You are advancing the state-of-the-art in this domain by developing new cognitive services, algorithms and concepts.
  • You are building up hands-on experience by implementing these advanced services and by evaluating through emulation on a large testbed or through detailed simulations.
  • You publish and present results both at international conferences and in scientific journals.
  • This research leads to a PhD degree. Throughout the complete PhD period, you receive a full-time, attractive salary.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Your profile

  • We are looking for candidates with the following qualitifications and skills.
  • You have (or will receive within a few months) a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Informatics or Optics. You are acquainted with the Java or C++ programming language. Experience and a strong interest in existing or new network technologies are a plus.
  • You are able to plan and carry out your tasks in an independent way. You have strong analytical skills to interpret the obtained research results.
  • You are a team player and have strong communication skills.
  • You are able to commit to timing and milestones set forward by different research projects.
  • Your English is fluent, both speaking and writing.
