DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Trade and Markets Division monitors and analyses trends in international, regional and national agricultural commodity markets, collecting and disseminating comprehensive market and policy information concerning the major traded commodities and those important to food security. It also undertakes forward looking outlook studies. The Division analyses global issues that affect agricultural trade, including policy analysis of trade measures and agreements, and provides technical support and capacity building to member states in all these areas. Through its Global Information and Early Warning Service, the Division is also responsible for FAO's early warnings on food shortfalls. The Division houses the secretariats of the Committee on Commodity Problems (CCP), nine Intergovernmental Commodity Groups (IGGs) and the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS).

Under the direct supervision of the Economist, Trade and Markets Division, the incumbent will provide coordination, liaison and operational support to the implementation of the Regional Initiative on Agri-food Trade and Regional Integration for Europe and Central Asia, related to the activities of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Agricultural Trade Expert Network. In particular, the incumbent will:

  • provide support to the day to day coordination and organizational support towards the implementation of the Regional Initiative on Agri-food Trade and Regional Integration for Europe and Central Asia, as part of the CIS Agricultural Trade Expert Network;
  • assist with preparing communicational products of the Network (promotional and informational materials, articles for web and media, news digest etc.) related to agricultural trade in the region developed;
  • provide support to the organization of the Network activities, including meetings, seminars, conferences, e-learning courses, online discussion forums,;
  • provide assistance to GIEWS with the monitoring of crop prospects and the food security situation in the CIS countries (time permitting);
  • expand the use of Russian language in published materials (printed and web) and ensure that more meetings are conducted in Russian;
  • perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should meet the following:

  • Advanced University degree in Agricultural Economics, Agri-business, Agronomy or related fields
  • Three years of relevant experience in research institutions or international organizations (Ph. D. or equivalent degree may substitute for two years of the required experience)
  • Working knowledge of Russian and limited knowledge of English, French, Spanish, Arabic or Chinese

Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Ability to plan, organize and communicate effectivelyAbility to promote active dialogue across the organization and with external stakeholders
  • Extent and relevance of experience with agricultural issues in the Europe and Central Asia region
  • Capacity to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Extent and relevance of experience working in different geographical locations, particularly in field positions
