The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechatronics Engineer position.

Description of directorate/division

The Neutron Chopper group is part of the Instrument Technologies Division within the Science Directorate. The division is dedicated to providing key systems to the construction of the facilities scientific instruments and supporting them during operation. The chopper group will compose 8-10, engineers and technicians who are jointly responsible for neutron choppers systems across the facility. The group's activities are undertaken within the context of an international ESS scientific and technical collaboration with partners around Europe.

Description of main responsibilities

The engineer will participate in small project teams of engineers and technicians executing both technology development and instrument construction projects.

Activities within the Chopper technologies development project will include:

  • Designing and optimising novel new neutron chopper components and assemblies;
  • Validating design choices and performance through analytical or computer simulations;
  • Participating in the construction of technology demonstrators for proof of concept, component selection and performance testing;
  • Participation in initiatives to ensure the safe operation, improve performance, reliability and maintainability of systems installed or under development.

Activities within Instrument construction project supporting the chopper work unit leaders will include;

  • Preparing technical and project documents including specifications, design concepts, work schedules and budgets;
  • Conducting detailed design of chopper systems to the requirements of instrument projects;
  • Liaising with in-house teams to develop solutions;
  • Supporting procurement activities;
  • Participating in the assembly and commissioning of chopper systems prior to installation;
  • Executing equipment test programs;
  • Participating in the installation and commissioning of equipment on the ESS site.

Qualifications

The nature of this position with a development, project and equipment support role requires the right candidate to be polyvalent with both technical competence, and operational capacities and with hands on experience. We are therefore looking for the following qualifications:

  • A Degree in Mechatronic Engineering;
  • 3+ years of experience in a engineering environment.

The candidate should be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience in the mechanical design using CAD software;
  • Experience in electronic design and/or programming;
  • Experience of test and/or development of electromechanica systems;
  • Experience in working in mechanical or electrical workshop.

In addition experience would be preferred in:

  • Knowledge of basic project management practices;
  • Knowledge of Catia v5 CAD software;
  • Experience of working in an international environment is essential;
  • Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
