DOCTORAL CANDIDATE or RESEARCH ASSISTANT, Sound and Physical Interaction Research Group

The job begins in winter 2015 and the duration is 4 months full time or part time. The position will remain open until it is filled.

Key Accountabilities and Qualifications

Sound and Physical Interaction (SOPI) research group at the Department of Media, Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture is looking for a doctoral student or a master’s student to work on a prototype of a smart interface in ambient human interaction context that will a) be interfaced with wearable technologies; b) detect and understand user’s actions and behaviour patterns to customise the functionality of a device to fit user’s needs; c) give the users control over the system with innovative uses of tactile, visual and audio modalities; d) offer adaptive and reactive features to better understand how and when to improve the interaction. This is a continuation project, therefore the tools/systems developed in previous NOISA project (http://sopi.aalto.fi/research/noisa/) will be available to be developed further. The doctoral student or master’s student will be responsible for the research and prototype implementation of this smart interface and its interactive system. The doctoral student and/or master’s student will also be responsible for publishing the results in international peer-reviewed journals.

A doctoral student must have a Master’s degree and possess a post-graduate study place in Aalto University or in any other equivalent University. A Master’s student must be enrolled in a degree programme at Aalto University or at any other equivalent University. The candidate also must have familiarity with sensor input/output devices (kinect v2, myo, leap motion, etc.), knowledge of digital sound synthesis methods & techniques and programming (especially in C, C++, and Pure Data Libpd) and some experience in statistical methods & machine learning techniques.

Wage level

Salary will be paid according to the University’s salary scheme.
