Vacancy Overview

To manage and drive the performance of a team of specialist engineers within the Design Authority and to also undertake technical project work.
Nature and Scope

The role is a combined technical and managerial position.  The primary focus is on driving improved performance from the engineering team related to the coal operations at Cottam and West Burton Power Stations.  However, it should be noted that the Design Authority is also experiencing increasing requests for support from other parts of EDF Energy, such as Renewables.  One of the challenges of the role is to help to develop the mechanical engineering team to be more adept at providing this support.
 
The mechanical engineering team also works closely with the Electrical and C&I team, hence it is expected that there will be a need for close liaison with the Electrical and C&I team leader.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Manage the designated team to deliver the long term fleet asset strategy, aligned with business objectives
  • Coach and develop team member competencies in consultation with the Chief Engineers
  • Provide (where practicable) continuous professional development and mentorship to subordinates
  • Provide technical expertise and engineering support to internal and external customers
  • Support the Chief Engineers and Head of Design Authority as needed on engineering projects, resource management/deployment
  • Support the Chief Engineers and Head of Design Authority to develop synergies and best practise through internal and external stakeholders for assets and areas under your control
  • Engage with other stakeholders (Asset Performance, Maintenance, Operations etc) to ensure alignment of technical work and resources across the business
  • Support deployment of engineering and technical standards within the governance framework.
  • Support initiatives to optimise plant integrity, reliability and performance through robust risk management techniques, ensuring that future ALARP & operational sustainability is embedded within the system health framework.
  • Support DA and cross business working group activities to meet the optimised coal operational strategy objectives and targets.
  • Support the drive for innovation, new technologies and technology within the team to deliver permanent solutions.
  • Fulfil any other managerial or engineering related duties as may be required from time to time by the business.
  • Support and drive business initiatives, strategies and objectives to the best of your ability in a sustainable manner adding value to EDF Energy within your appointed capacity.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Mechanical (or closely related technical discipline) Engineering Degree
  • Experience in leading and managing teams of professional engineers
  • Power industry experience
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Experience solving plant operational integrity and reliability problems

 
Ideally the candidate would have experience in some of the following technical areas related to coal power stations; Boiler systems, Pressure systems, Large rotating plant, Civil assets, Cooling water systems.
 
Experience and knowledge of Gas Turbines, Gas Storage/Transport and Wind Turbines would also be advantageous.
