Research Fellow Positions in Robotics

Arbetsplatsbeskrivning

University of Gävle Faculty of Engineering and Sustainable Development announces two Research Fellow positions in service robots. The positions are in the Department of Electronics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and will be made at Post Doctoral Research Fellow or Research Fellow levels depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicants.University of Gävle (HiG) was founded in 1977, and has approximately 14,500 students, more than 50 study programmes, about 1,000 courses in humanities, social and natural sciences and technology. HiG focues its research in 2 profiles, namely, Built Environment and Health-promoting working life which include Sustainable built environment, Musculoskeletal disorders, and Electrical engineering as key activity areas. The campus at Kungsbäck in Gävle offers a beautiful study and research environment with all departments gathered in one place which is only a few minutes from the city centre. HiG is located in a scenic area with Gävle River and the Boulogner Forest as its closest neighbours. The carefully re-built regiment barracks have created a gathered campus where the distance between students, teachers and researchers is close.

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for experienced researchers to contribute significantly to ongoing research and teaching activities in the area of robotics and automation. The work will focus on detailed technical and associated support for the current and planned activities to develop physical assistance exoskeletons for elderly and disabled persons to perform normal daily living activities. In this respect, personal mobility and manipulation are essential activities taken for granted but which become increasingly difficult due to the ageing process.HiG has initiated research activities in the area of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) as well as a new Masters programme in Automation. The research focuses on global ageing societal issues and how appropriate assistive robotic exoskeletons can be developed to allow elderly persons to stay living independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Several international projects with external funding are currently running and new projects are due to start soon. The Research Fellows need to have good experience of the general area of robotics both in hardware and software systems development areas in order to be able to contribute as anticipated and assist in leading detailed technical and non-technical tasks. In particular, HiG is coordinating the EXO-LEGS AAL project aimed at developing lower-body mobility assistive robotised “legs” able to help elderly persons perform everyday tasks such as straight walking on flat ground, stable standing, sit-to-stand transfers, walking upstairs, downstairs and on ramps, etc.The positions are available immediately and the successful applicants will work closely with Gurvinder Virk to carry out technical and non-technical tasks within the projects and assist in management of specific activities within the Robotics Group. The appointments will be on a fixed term of 2 years but with the possibility of being extended. In addition, shorter more flexible visiting appointments will be considered for suitably experienced researchers who can make good contributions to the on-going research activities. The Appointments will be as Post Doctoral Research Fellows or as Research Fellows depending on qualifications and experience. Appointments at Post Doctoral Research Fellow level will be made for successful applicants with a PhD and sufficient relevant experience.HiG is striving for ethnic and cultural diversity and gender balance in all categories of staff.

Kvalifikationer

Candidates for appointment at Post-Doctoral Research Level are expected to have a Doctoral degree in an area such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Applied Computer Science with sufficient specialist experience in robot systems design and development. Persons without a Doctoral degree may apply but must have suitable research experience to be eligible for consideration for appointment at Research Fellow level. The candidate must have deep and extensive experience of working in the areas of control and robotics (hardware and software aspects), electronics, mechanism design and embedded systems as well as having experience of modelling and simulation, human biomechanics, real time control systems and controller design. He/she must be able to work independently or as part of the collective team with the ability to take leadership roles in the team to support the line manager in coordinating the group work at University of Gävle and inter-acting with the international collaborating partners. Due to the global nature of the collaborations and the multiple time zones, many e-meetings may need to be held during out of office hours to accommodate all the partners.
