Postdoctoral Researcher/Project Manager (Laboratory for Future Electronics)

Position will be placed in the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering. Research and teaching areas in the Department are:
– Advanced Electronics Systems
– Electronic and Biomaterials and Manufacturing
– Communication and Positioning Circuits and Systems.

Job description:

The strategic research opening project “The Naked User Approach – Nordic perspective to gadget free hyperconnected environments” is funded by The Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes) (http://www.tekes.fi/en/whats-going-on/news/tekes-rahoittaa-kolmea-uutta-strategista-tutkimusavausta-yhteensa-58-miljoonalla-eurolla/). The core research will focus on user experience and user centric design aspects, the technologies for the distributed physical interaction layer, and the ICT enablers and solutions in the digital environment. The candidate’s work will focus on the technologies for “stick-it-on-devices” – the building blocks of smart digital surroundings. These devices increase the functional potential of the environment by carrying sensing, actuating, computing, and/or connectivity functions.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out own research on the project work plan, involved in day to day management of the project and interfacing with research consortium (VTT, Aalto University, University of Lapland, University of Oulu, and Demos Helsinki) and international research network. The emphasis between research work and management will be depending on the qualification and orientation of the successful candidate. If the emphasis will be on research work, the successful candidate will be appointed as Postdoctoral Researcher. If the emphasis will be on management, the successful candidate will be appointed as Project Manager.

Requirements:

A background in novel electronic devices/systems, especially thin/flexible/bendable/stretchable electronics or in novel fabrication processes such as printed electronics is a strong advantage. Ability to work, cooperate and communicate in a multicultural team and to interact with research partners and companies is important. Experience of studying and working abroad and contacts to international research will be appreciated. Good English language skills (oral and written) are essential.

The successful candidate must hold an applicable academic degree in a relevant field such as electrical engineering, measurement systems, or materials science.

The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher requires an applicable doctoral degree and the competence to pursue independent scientific work. The successful candidate must also possess the teaching skills needed to perform the duties of the position. The candidate should have demonstrated the ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

The position of a Project Manager requires an applicable higher university degree, diverse experience of the research field and research methodology. The successful candidate must also possess the competence to supervise a research group or a laboratory.

Salary:

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, both Postdoctoral Researcher position and Project Manager position are placed on job demands levels 5-6. In addition, employees receive performance based salary.

Trial period:

Trial period of four (4) months applies.

Other:

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of one and a half years commencing on 1 March 2015 or as mutually agreed. The position may be extended by mutual agreement.
