Position Description
Title of position: Junior Professional Officer (JPO)
Office/Department: Atmospheric Research and Environment Branch, Research Department
Division/Unit: World Weather Research (WWR) Division
Duty Station: Geneva
Duration of the assignment: 1 year with possibility of extension for another year


Duties:
Under the supervision of the Chief of the World Weather Research Division (WWR), the incumbent will
perform the following duties:
1. Following the guidelines established by the WWRP High Impact Weather Project (HIWeather) Steering Group undertake the following duties related to the International Coordination Office for the WWRP High Impact Weather Project (HIWeather):

  • Assist the planning and implementation of HIWeather activities;
  • Support the communication between the HIWeather Steering Group and Task Teams, and assist the interaction with the HIWeather Strategic Advisory Group;
  • Organize HIWeather workshops, meetings and other activities, and support the preparation of HIWeather reports, correspondence and publications;
  • Provide assistance for the management and administration of a dedicated trust fund;
  • Together with the HIWeather co-chairs and the Chief of WWRD assist the communication with funding agencies worldwide to identify funding opportunities for HIWeather;
  • Together with the HIWeather co-chairs and the Chief of WWRD implement and maintain contact with relevant international organizations and initiatives;
  • Promote HIWeather within the relevant scientific communities in order to entrain further scientific expertise to work on the HIWeather research themes; to assist in increasing the involvement of scientists from least developed and developing countries;
  • Enhance the involvement of early career scientists in HIWeather;
  • Facilitate the communication between HIWeather and stakeholders, maintaining a special focus on the needs of least developed and developing countries;
  • Coordinate and manage the HIWeather webpage and other promotional activities;
  • Promote cooperation and coordination with other WMO Programmes and activities.

2. Following the guidelines established by the WWRP Scientific Steering Committee and in coordination with the WWRP projects (Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Prediction, High Impact Weather, Polar Prediction), provide support to the implementation of additional WWRP outreach and capacity development strategies with specific focus on high impact weather events;
3. Assist with the management of capacity development activities, which include summer schools, training workshops, support to early career scientists networks, and participation of young scholars in major WWRP conferences and events;
4. Develop and enhance existing plans/proposals for information dissemination concerning WWRP research activities; identify, propose and develop activities to enhance the visibility of the WWRP, and advise on options and techniques for more effective dissemination of WWRP findings.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Qualifications required:
Education
MSc or equivalent degree from a recognized university or technical institute in meteorology or other environmental sciences, physics or engineering. A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in research activities related to weather prediction or climate analysis would be an advantage.

Experience
2-3 years of experience in a field relevant to the duties described above.

Language skills
Excellent knowledge of English (spoken and written). Knowledge of any of official languages of the WMO (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish) would be an advantage.

Computer literacy
Ability to effectively and efficiently work in a modern office with Office, Google and Adobe Acrobat applications. Knowledge of database and content management systems for World Wide Web related activities will be considered as an advantage.

Communication skills
Good communication skills, as well as desire and ability to work efficiently in a work environment characterized by cultural diversity.
