Postdoc position in dielectric elastomer ultrasonic trandsducer development

The Mads Clausen Institute at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a postdoc position within the field of dielectric elastomers. The postdoc is part of a Proof of Concept project with Siemens A/S, Flow Instruments as the industrial partner. The position is available as of February 1, 2015 for a one-year period.

The topic of the position is the development of an ultrasonic wrap around dielectric elastomer transducer. In our group we have shown theoretically that dielectric elastomer ultrasonic transducers have the potential to out-perform ultrasonic transducers based on the piezoelectric effect. We have furthermore experimentally shown that Silicone based dielectric elastomer sheets are able to produce a clear ultrasonic signal up to at least the MHz range. The postdoc is expected to take the lead in the future development of this ultrasonic transducer technology. The aim of the work is to design a flexible transducer, which can be wrapped around a pipe, so as to generate a homogeneous ultrasonic signal around the perimeter of the pipe. The application of this kind of transducer is the construction of novel flow meters. This developed transducer is to be tested on the test bed situated at Siemens A/S, Flow Instruments.
We offer a challenging position in an international and stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure for ultrasonic transducer characterization and an excellent opportunity for collaboration both within SDU and with renowned international research groups.

The successful applicant should have:

  • A PhD degree (or equivalent) within physics, Engineering or a related topic
  • A strong background in handling dielectric elastomer materials
  • Some competences within theoretical description of dielectric materials and/or acoustic signals
  • A strong academic record
  • Good collaboration and communication skills

The application must include (as pdf-files):

  •  A letter motivating the application
  •  A detailed CV including a complete and numbered list of publications
  •  PhD diploma
