Doctoral Student, Information Theory

Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) at University of Oulu, Finland is strengthening its information theory and iterative signal processing related research offering  a position for a new Doctoral Student. CWC is one of the leading research units in the field of wireless communications globally. Its mission is to conduct world-class research, create new technologies, train world-class graduates, and transfer technology to real use.

We are looking for a talented research-oriented person who is interested in research on future wireless technologies and specifically in information theory for lossy communications and compression as well as related signal processing algorithm and code design. Specific research topics include:

Lossy compression and communications

  • Rate distortion theory
  • Joint source-channel coding
  • Iterative (turbo) algorithm design

Job Description

As a Doctoral Student you will carry out research work within a research team, publish research results in the most esteemed international fora, attend doctoral courses and complete your doctoral thesis within 3–4 years. Requirements

To successfully occupy the position of a Doctoral Student, you must possess an applicable Master of Science degree (or other applicable Master’s degree) completed with very good / excellent grades.

In addition we appreciate:

  • strong fundamental knowledge on information theory and iterative processing
  • knowledge in wireless communication systems and underlying theory
  • capability to write scientific publications
  • readiness for demanding challenges and traveling
  • high motivation and efficiency
  • co-operational and team working skills

Salary

Depending on personal achievement and performance, the salary of the Doctoral student will be set at levels 2–4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities
(€ 2400 – 3 588 gross).
