PhD: Lane-Specific Traffic Control

Travel times on motorways can vary depending on the lane a driver chooses to drive on when traffic is not well-balanced over the available lanes. This project will develop a first of its kind lane-specific motorway traffic state control system to improve traffic flow efficiency. It will develop (1) a lane-specific traffic management strategy, (2) a driver interface to optimise the compliance of the driver with lane-specific advice and (3) a vehicle positioning system at the lane level. The use of traffic flow simulation models, a driving simulator and an instrumented vehicle provide a realistic research environment.
The PhD researcher in project (2) will develop the traffic management measures. The candidate will model traffic operations for multi-lane, multi-class traffic. The effects of lane changes need to be modelled explicitly, as well as the effects of measures on the lane changes. To model this, experimental facilities, such as a driving simulator and a test vehicle are available. Using simulation tools, collective benefits of measures need to be determined. Besides conducting her/his own research, the PhD student is expected to devote not more than 25% of his/her work time to assisting with teaching and other scientific projects in the department.
