UNOPS Development Group Cluster is based in the GPSO - New York Office and supports a diverse and complex portfolio including partners such as the United Nations Development Programme (the Bureau for Development Policy, the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation), the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations Secretariat and a broadening community of primarily New York-based UN partners in the delivery of project management, implementation and administration services.

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) is an initiative of the UN Secretary-General which seeks to strengthen cultural relations between communities around the world. The UNAOC Secretariat is based in New York, New York and is funded by multiple donors. UNAOC runs a number of largely web-based projects, including 'clearinghouses' of teaching resources and databases; it also maintains its primary web presence at www.unaoc.org.

Pursuant to this, UNAOC seeks a highly-qualified individual to handle the creative design, technical development and management of all new and existing websites under its umbrella. Artistic skills and branding experience are highly desirable. The successful candidate will be experienced in the development of sites using a content management system framework either under Joomla or Wordpress, with the capacity to learn both.

It is important that the person recruited has an excellent understanding of the mission and vision of UNAOC, and is able to respond proactively to its needs. The Web Specialist will be called upon to contribute to the development of the organization's evolving web and online communications strategy. The Web Development Specialist works with the Communications Team and Project Staff and reports to the Director, UNAOC.

Functional Responsibilities

Ability to support and promote UNAOC in virtual communities and networks; Responsible for developing, and maintaining the primary websites of UNAOC by: Planning: web design, technical development, code writing, and implementation of all new and existing UNAOC websites. More specifically: Web Design: Integrate best practices to plan all aspects of the structure of the websites including information architecture, look and feel of the user interface, navigation, sections, pages, widgets, modules, buttons, logos and icons for enriched user experience.

Web Development: Integrate best practices to develop web platforms, including customizations to ensure flexibility of the site platforms going forward. Coordinate with communication team, support staff and IT staff on project development from concept and development to visual quality assurance, user testing and final implementation.

Implementation: Ensure best practices are maintained in the launch of new websites and new content on existing websites in addition to the continued maintenance of all new and existing UNAOC web platforms.

Train staff and interns in performing updates to all of websites using various content management systems, as well as updating html email templates for email newsletters.

Liaise with and manage all ICT-related vendors.

Collaborate with functional project managers and program specialists to prepare materials using multimedia tools.

Analyze existing platforms to identify weaknesses, gaps and opportunities for improvement of existing platforms.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

EDUCATION

  • Master Degree in IT, Graphic or Visual Arts, Communications, Computer Programming. Candidates with a Bachelor's degree or a relevant Technical/Professional License or Diploma may be considered with sufficient additional years of experience to the minimum requirement outlined below.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in website development, design and/or management, and sub-branding.
  • Experience in needs identification and analysis
  • Final Cut Studio and programming in Wordpress.
  • Ability to reverse engineer as well as improve existing websites including CMS structure

Advanced knowledge of the following is strongly desired:

  • HTML, XHTML, CSS design, PHP, cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility, Access, mySQL, JavaScript
  • Macromedia suite: Dreamweaver MX 2004, Flash, ColdFusion, Contribute
  • Adobe suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
  • CMS, graceful degradation, unobtrusive JavaScript
  • W3C Web standards, WAI, ADA & Sections 508 and 504 compliance
  • XML, AJAX, RSS, ASP, SQLserver, ActionScript, Flash rich internet application

LANGUAGE

  • Fluency in oral and written English. Other UN official languages would be an asset.
