The Robert Beevers Memorial Studentship in association with the Development, Policy and Practice Group, The Open University

Open University - Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology Department of Engineering and Innovation

full-time funded PhD Studentship commencing October 2015

Approximate annual stipend of £13,863

The Open University has a well-established research degrees programme with nearly 1200 postgraduate research students working on a wide range of projects. The Development Policy and Practice Group (DPP) is the institutional home of Development Studies and Development Management within the Open University. DPP has an active and highly regarded graduate school. We are very keen to encourage graduates to undertake research that informs policy and practice in ways that will have positive effects on their organisations and contribute to development more widely.

Following a generous donation from the Robert Beevers Memorial Fund, the Group is seeking well qualified candidates to study towards a PhD in one of the following areas:

  • The politics of innovation and development, especially emerging models of innovation; state-industry relations or public action for innovation and development;
  • The socio-technical analysis of engineering and development, including the practices of engineers working in development;
  • Innovation systems and technical capability in developing countries, including regulation in healthcare industries
  • Migration, development and innovation

This opportunity is only open to candidates holding an Open University qualification in a relevant subject area AND they come from a developing country/LMIC.

In addition to the Open University’s application documents candidates should provide an excellent 3-4 page research proposal that maps on to one of the above key areas. The proposed research should have demonstrable and practical impact for development, result in policy oriented and practical publications as well as research outputs and be able to feed into policy networks either in the UK and/or internationally. The successful candidate will be expected to engage with the funders about their research.
