Scientist - Electron Microscopy

The Bioimaging facility at Rothamsted Research has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Electron Microscopist to join our team. Rothamsted Research's recently refurbished bioimaging facility (http://www.rothamsted.ac.uk/bioimaging) provides state-of-the-art imaging equipment and expertise available to internal as well as external users. We undertake research in all standard microscopical techniques used in biological research.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day running of the Electron Microscopy instruments of the bioimaging unit and to carry out and support research and training. They will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), two Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) and associated equipment for TEM/SEM sample preparation. Applicants should have proven experience with TEM and/or SEM instruments; interest in the EM field, and a desire to follow up the latest technical developments. You should be well motivated, have strong problem-solving, team working and communication skills with the ability to relate to and communicate with users about EM issues.

The Electron Microscopist will:

  • Utilize advanced skills in electron microscopy to assist researchers in achieving the results needed 
  • Learn and develop protocols tailored to the requirements of the specific crop and other biological systems 
  • Participate in the publication of research results, manage laboratory operations and train users in electron microscopy methods and instrument operation 
  • Evaluate new and innovative technologies in electron microscopy research, 
  • Conduct experiments with the consultation of the facility manager 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals and objectives of the Institute

This is a full time indefinite full time appointment at band D with a starting salary in the region of £29,542 rising to £32,315.
