Funded PhD Scholarship: Development of submersible sensor and associated data transmission systems

National University of Ireland, Galway - School of Engineering and Informatics

Supervisor: Dr. Padraig Molloy, School of Engineering and Informatics, NUI Galway

Duration: Funded for 4 years (Structured PhD), full-time with extensive secondment to industry.

Project description: The project is a technically challenging investigation of sonar, ultrasound, and pressure based sensor technologies suitable for use when submerged in aggressive and corrosive environments. Tanks that hold liquid waste can containing a significant proportion of solids, both in suspension and as sediment, and monitoring the relative proportion of these represents a major technical and environmental challenge. The project will involve designing, protyping and testing promising sensor technologies and their ancillary power supply and signal conditioning systems. The proposed project is being part funded by Tekelek Group, a multinational SME, based in Shannon and the Irish Research Council.

Stipend: €16,000 p.a. plus fees of €5,750 for 4 years.

Entry Requirements: Honours degree level Electronic or Applied Science graduate or undergraduate expecting to graduate in 2015 with a 1st class or high 2.1.  The applicant should have good knowledge and interest in electronic hardware and be interested in developing their expertise to the highest levels in: sensor power and communications systems, pcb design and board layout, analog/digital microcontrollers and microprocessors, data acquisition and processing technologies, wireless data transmission networks.

Expected start date: September 2015
