PhD Studentship: Multi-scale Modelling of Fatigue Deformation

Loughborough University - Wolfson School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering

A PhD studentship is available for high calibre candidate to join a research team engaged in multiscale modelling of fatigue deformation of nickel-based superalloys for gas turbine application. The project intends to develop a handshaking numerical algorithm to bridge discrete dislocation dynamics, crystal plasticity and viscoplasticity models for simulation of material deformation under fatigue loading condition.

The Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University has outstanding research expertise and facilities in mechanics of materials. The Mechanics of Advanced Materials (MoAM) Research Group has an international reputation in research into deformation, fatigue and fracture of advanced engineering materials. In particular, the MoAM group has focused on multi-scale multi-physics modelling of mechanical behaviour for a range of materials and structures under service loading conditions with worldwide academic and industrial collaborators.

The candidates must be expecting, or have already obtained, a first degree (1st class or high 2:1 honours or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics or other relevant subject. Good communication skills are essential.

The proposed starting date is 1st July 2015. These three-year studentships are generally open to UK/EU students but applications from exceptionally talented overseas candidates will also be considered. The studentship will provide a maximum stipend of £13,863 per annum tax free (the exact amount depends on the fee status and experience) and UK/EU candidates would not be required to pay any tuition fees.
