Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork invites applications for the following:

Reporting to the Head of MicroNano Systems, the Head of Group will be responsible for managing and leading a high performance, research team to deliver world-class outputs and generate economic impact from research excellence in soft, thin-film magnetics materials, devices and circuits. The activity will encompass materials, processing, design and characterisation of magnetic materials and novel structures including discrete components, magnetics integrated on silicon and embedded in printed circuit board. They will contribute to the continued development of a ‘high engagement/high performance working environment amongst all staff by promoting Tyndall’s key values of Leadership, Excellence, Teamwork, People, Entrepreneurship and Optimism.

Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage and sustain an existing world-renowned research team in soft, thin film magnetic materials, devices and circuits, generating world-beating, high impact, research outputs that will deliver highly trained graduate students, innovative technology platforms, commercialisable intellectual property and key publications and presentations in leading journals and international conferences.

• Lead the definition and implementation of the Team’s strategic research agenda and roadmap in line with Tyndall’s strategic research plans and in conjunction with Tyndall senior management (i.e. Tyndall’s CEO, the Head of the MicroNano Systems Centre, the Head of Strategic Programmes, the Senior Programme Manager in ICT for Energy Efficiency and the Head of Business Development), key industry partners and international technology roadmaps.

• Provide leadership, management, coaching, mentoring and career development for an experienced team of professional research staff, and postgraduate students.

• Attract and recruit world-class research staff and post-graduate students in order to build a world-leading research team.

• Participate in the delivery of high quality, academic supervision and examination of students at postgraduate level within the team.

• Actively engage in the highest quality project management, project co-ordination and budget management of research projects.

• Build high impact, collaborative relationships with world-leading researchers, in Tyndall and in both national and international academia and industry.

• Secure sustainable funding from both industry and public organisations such as SFI, EI and EU H2020 in order to increase the scale of the team and to ensure its long term sustainability.

• Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Quality Management system and Health and Safety standards.

• Carry out additional duties as may be reasonably required within the scope and level of the post.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

• A post graduate degree, at Masters or PhD level, in Science or Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.

• A minimum of 10 years post-graduate experience in R&D.

• Demonstrated innovation and research excellence in magnetic materials, devices and circuits.

• Lead author or co-author on publications in high impact IEEE peer-reviewed circuit journals and international conferences and/or on significant patents.

• Demonstrated ability in leading high performing research teams, including staff and students at all levels from graduate to senior staff researcher, with successful outcomes.

• Experience in successfully leading and managing complex and multiple research projects.

• A track record of successfully raising funding for research, including the creation of collaborations between industry and public research organisations.

• Proven experience in IP management, protection and commercialization.

• Excellent leadership, communications, management and interpersonal skills.
