Ref MB-09 Principal Investigator - IC Circuit Design

Reporting jointly to the MCCI Director and the Head of Tyndall’s Micro Nano Systems Centre, the Principal Investigator will build and lead a high performance research team to deliver world-class outputs and create an international centre of excellence in Analogue, RF or Mixed-signal circuits. They will create the research roadmap for their own team as well as having a strategic input into the overall strategic research plans for both MCCI and Tyndall. They will deliver on the research roadmap by growing collaborations with academic and industrial partners, driving increased funding to expand the group and ensure its long-term sustainability. As a key leader, they will contribute to the continued development of a ‘high engagement/high performance’ working environment amongst all staff by leading the way on Tyndall’s key values of Leadership, Excellence, Teamwork, People, Entrepreneurship and Optimism.

Responsibilities

• Generate world-beating research outputs in Analogue, RF or Mixed-signal circuits, including Intellectual Property and publications in leading conferences and journals such as ISSCC and JSSC. 

• Work with the MCCI Director on defining the overall research strategy and roadmap for MCCI at a centre level.

• Work with the Head of the Micro Nano Systems Centre, Tyndall’s CEO and relevant Tyndall PIs on defining the overall research strategy and roadmap for Tyndall in the IC design space.

• Set and lead the research agenda of their own team including project definitions in conjunction with industry partners and in line with MCCI and Tyndall strategic research plans.

• Attract and recruit key research staff and drive publication output in order to build a world-class research team.

• Supervise, mentor and develop the careers of team members with the aim of creating next generation research leaders.

• Direct and participate in the delivery of high quality, research-led teaching, academic supervision of students and examination at postgraduate level in the group, including development of postgraduate curricula.

• Actively engage in project management, co-ordination and budget management of research projects. 

• Build relationships with other research groups, internally, nationally and internationally, including the creation of collaborative projects.

• Build relationships with companies, including the creation of collaborative projects.

• Secure private and public funding including SFI, EI and EU H2020 in order to increase the scale of the team and to ensure its long term sustainability.

• Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.

• Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.

• Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Requirements

• A Masters or PhD post graduate degree in Engineering, or equivalent industry experience, is essential.

• Demonstrated innovation and excellence in Analogue, RF or Mixed-signal circuits research is essential with a minimum of 15 years post-graduate experience. 

• Significant patents and/or publications in IEEE peer-reviewed circuit journals and conferences are essential (preferably ISSCC, JSSC, CICC, ESSCIRC, RFIC or VLSI). 

• Experience in leading complex research teams with successful outcomes is essential.

• Experience in leading multiple projects simultaneously, supervising staff at levels from graduate to senior engineering and independent PI levels is essential.

• Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills is essential.

• Experience working with goals changing according to industry demands is desirable.

• Experience attracting talent to actively grow a research team is desirable. 

• A track record of successfully raising funding for research, including the creation of collaborations between industry and public research organisations, is desirable. 

• Experience in IP management, protection and commercialisation is desirable.
