PhD student position in Academic Entrepreneurship

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Description

Information about the research/the project/the division
This PhD student position is at the Division of Innovation Engineering and Management (IEM), which belongs to the Department of Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology. At IEM, research and teaching efforts focus on strategic and organizational issues related to the management of innovation and entrepreneurship. More specifically, we focus on business model innovation as something distinct from, and broader than, product and process innovation. Empirically, we typically conduct research in close co-operation with specific companies ranging in size from small startups to large multinationals. Our division is also responsible for the Master program Management of Economics and Innovation which includes courses such as Creating New Business and Strategic Management of Innovation and Technology.

The cadidate will conduct research that focuses on methods for stimulating academic entrepreneurship. Growing interest in leveraging the ideas and technologies developed by academic researchers has led to a number of initiatives aimed at systematically stimulating technological transfer and academic entrepreneurship. This is typically done through a number of mechanisms, including patenting, licensing, start-up creation and various forms of university-industry partnerships. Within this broad context, the candidate will focus on programs that seek to put researchers through processes that emulate independent entrepreneurship. Examples of such programs include the US based National Science Foundation I-Corps program. Another example is a recent Vinnova-funded initiative labeled “the Business Prototyping Project” that aims at supporting the commercialization efforts of research groups at Chalmers.

Little systematic research has been conducted that evaluates the effectiveness of introducing academic scientists to such programs and the impact this might have on their behavior, engagement in the entrepreneurial process and the effects on their conduct future research (nature, framing and objectives of research projects). Therefore, the candidate will conduct research that explores, evaluates and develops methods and programs for academic entrepreneurship that emulates independent entrepreneurship.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have (or be close to finishing) a MSC level degree, at least 240 higher education credits, in industrial engineering or similar.
