Job description

Sustainable energy solutions encompass not only efficient and renewable technologies but also the establishment of policy, institutional and market structures to foster new technological alternatives and paths. Energy solutions need to operate realistically and efficiently in the context of dynamic energy markets, stringent environmental and social requirements, and limited resource availability. What solutions can be pursued globally and regionally, which will lead to sustainable development? What are the solutions that will lead to mitigation and adaptation to climate change while also promoting sustainable development? These are central research questions at ECS. More information about the ECS division can be found at www.ecs.kth.se

The field of research at ECS covers energy and climate studies with a systems approach at global and regional level, and in different country contexts. Policy and market studies, as well as methodological development and modelling of energy are relevant research projects. This PhD position will focus on urban sustainability which is one of the main research areas at ECS.

The PhD candidate will contribute to the newly started project Smart city concepts in Curitiba - innovation for mobility and energy efficiency. The project is coordinated by KTH and funded by VINNOVA, Volvo Bus and COMBITECH. In this project, the potential synergy of technological options is explored to promote energy efficiency and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Planning, transport/mobility, ICT, and energy and climate related concepts are explored. We work closely with local partners including the municipality, academy and industry. The candidate is expected to share research results in seminars, publish in peer-review journals, and help in teaching and administration at the division.

Qualifications

To be eligible for this position, the candidate shall hold a M.Sc. in engineering, planning or another field relevant to the topic of research. Applications of students that aim at finalizing their masters theses before the first half of 2015 will be also considered.

Skills in methodologies for analyzing resource efficiency in the urban environment are strong merits. Experience in inter-disciplinary research is a great advantage. Knowledge of Portuguese and Swedish is also an advantage but not a decisive requirement. The successful candidate will work in an international and multi-disciplinary academic team, and interact with multiple project partners in the private and public sector. Communi-cation and organizational capabilities are, therefore, important. High proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

We will place great emphasis on personal characteristics for this position.
