PhD Student Position in Resource Allocation in Future Mobile Networks

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Swedens technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 13,400 first and second level students and almost 1,900 doctoral students. KTH has 4,900 employees.

The Laboratory for Communication Networks (LCN) at KTH Electrical Engineering conducts world class research in the field of computer networking, with a focus on networked system design, performance modeling and evaluation and security. Current areas that our research covers are sensor networks, multimedia communications, cloud computing, and mobile and vehicular communications. Members of the laboratory participate in several EU projects and collaborate with researchers at universities in Europe and in North America. Our graduates are highly sought after by the IT industry, and are employed at research labs and companies in Europe and in the U.S.

Project description

Next generation mobile networks will have to provide connectivity to billions of devices and will have to support services for delivering and for processing the data originating from the devices. Data delivery and processing require computational resources, which can be allocated dynamically at various locations in the mobile network thanks to advances in virtualization and software defined networking.

As a part of this project, the goal is to evaluate design choices for the allocation of communication and computational resources at diverse points of the mobile network infrastructure, from the backhaul to wireless access. In order to perform the evaluation, the project involves developing mathematical modeling of resource allocation problems, the design of algorithms for solving the resource allocation problems, and the analytical and simulation-based evaluation of the proposed solutions. The project will involve joint work with other PhD students and researchers at KTH, at research labs and at other universities. The research results will have to be presented to fellow researchers at top international conferences and in leading journals.

The successful applicant will enrol in the PhD program at KTH Electrical Engineering, which provides world class quality education, including a broad range of graduate courses ensuring an in-depth development of relevant competences and skills.

KTH offers an attractive working environment, generous remuneration, as well as other employment benefits. As a PhD student at KTH you have many opportunities to participate at conferences, projects and other relevant events which will extend your professional network and benefit your future career.

Qualifications and eligibility

The successful applicant is expected to hold or to be about to receive an MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a corresponding degree. Basic knowledge of computer networking is required and a strong mathematical background is a plus. A specialization in radio communications and/or machine learning is an asset. Knowledge of optimization and stochastic processes is an advantage. Skills of interest also include programming required for simulations and for empirical validation.

The successful applicant should have an outstanding academic track record, and well developed analytical and problem solving skills. We are looking for a strongly motivated person, who is able to work independently. Good command of English orally and in writing is required to publish and present results at international conferences and in international journals. The evaluation will be based on how well the applicant fulfills the above qualifications.
