Ph.D. student in Network on Chip

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Swedens technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 13,400 first and second level students and almost 1,900 doctoral students. KTH has 4,900 employees.

Job description

Network-on-Chip (NoC) is becoming the de-facto architecture for multicore and many-core chips. Since multiple applications run simultaneously on these chips, providing QoS to each application is as important as satisfying system-level performance and power consumption goals.

The project aims to develop a predictive QoS-power co-management framework in heterogeneous multicore architectures. Through collaborative resource-power allocation and control, it achieves multiple objectives in improving performance isolation, system throughput, energy efficiency and thermal balance. Specifically, it intends to (1) design a predictive QoS-power co-management framework for shared NoC and memory resources, which allows to jointly optimize not only application QoS and system throughput but also energy and thermal efficiency; (2) develop mathematical analysis techniques to understand theoretical potentials in performance and power/energy efficiency of the framework for a set of co-running applications; (3) implement and evaluate the framework to investigate how much the theoretical limits can be approached under practical conditions with associated overheads.

Qualifications

  • The applicant holds a Master degree in System-on-Chip, Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering or a related area. Strong skills in software programming and hardware modeling are required. Knowledge in mathematical performance/power modeling, performance analysis theory (particularly, network calculus) is highly desired. Experience in NoC and computer system simulation will be an advantage.
  • The applicant is strongly motivated, ambitious, and can perform critical thinking and analysis.
  • The applicant has a good command of English in writing and speaking. He or She is expected to publish research results in top conferences and journals.
