Ph.D. student position in lithium-ion batteries in vehicles

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Swedens technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 13,400 first and second level students and almost 1,900 doctoral students. KTH has 4,900 employees.

PhD student in chemical engineering in the field of applied electrochemistry

The use of batteries for vehicle propulsion, in for example hybrid electric vehicles, is growing in importance. The battery technology is a key factor for the large-scale implementation of such vehicles. Progress regarding cost, safety, lifetime and predicatability is particularly important.

Job description

The research project will be concerned with lithium-ion batteries for use in vehicle propulsion. It is part of a cooperation with Scania CV AB and the Department of Electrical Energy Conversion at KTH. It is funded by The Swedish Energy Agency and Scania.

The overall goal is to explore the possible synergies and improvements in the electric powertrain when you cross-link the fields of electrochemical energy storage and electrical energy conversion. Among the possible improvements that will be studied are new design topologies, more compact design, reduced complexity and increased energy efficiency.

The student will focus on these question from the perspective of the battery and its electrochemical aspects. One of the key questions is how the lifetime of the battery is affected by high-frequency current signals created by the power electronics, and to what extent the battery could actually assist the power electronics and allow a simplified design. Other possible topics are thermal behaviour of the battery in this context, and the effects of up-scaling from a single battery cell to larger modules consisting of many cells. The project offers great possibilities to gain cross-disciplinary skills of strategic importance for the field of electromobility, and to work in close collaboration between academia and industry.

Qualifications

Master of science in engineering physics (engineering science), chemical engineering or a related field. The project is partially multi-disciplinary and broad technical background is an advantage. Good oral and written communication skills in English and Swedish are an advantage.

The candidate should be highly motivated for doing scientific research and should have well developed analytical and problem solving skills as well as an interest and curiosity for multi-disciplinary problems in the context of energy savings towards a sustainable society.

To address its varied work, KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who willadd to the variety of the University, especially concerning its gender structure.
